Japan Earthquakes Tsunami Warning

A powerful offshore earthquake struck northeastern Japan on Monday, triggering tsunami alerts, coastal evacuations and transport disruptions before authorities later lifted the warnings. Japanese officials said the quake hit off the Sanriku coast at 4:53 p.m. local time, at a depth of about 20 kilometers, and was measured at magnitude 7.7. The tremor registered at an “upper 5” on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, strong enough to make movement difficult and to pose some risk of structural damage.
